  •        The founder of Grama Vidyodaya Sangha® Late Sri. M.C. Shivananda Sharma, a great visionary, was born in 1911 in the village of Madrahalli,T Narasipura Taluk . His parents were late Sri Kappana and late Smt Kalamma, who were from the agrarian family. Since there was lack of conducive atmosphere for early education Sharmaji left his native place at a tender age and went to Sri Siddhaganga Mutt, with support and blessings of his mother. He got his primary and secondary education in the Sri Mutt.

Then with the encouragement and blessings of the Sri Mutt, Sharmaji joined Sri Chamarajendra Samskrutha Patashala at Bengaluru and studied Sanskrit, staying in Gubbi Thotadappa Dharmasatra, where the present Swamiji of Sri Siddhaganga Mutt Sri Sri Shivakumara Swamiji was the co-resident.

Again with relentless patronage of the Sri Mutt Sharmaji went to Banaras Hindu University and got Sahitya Visharada Degree with high distinction. Then he visited many distinguished educational institutions such as Shanthinikethan, Shraddhananda’s Kangadi Gurukul Ashram, Acharya Vinobha Bhave’s Ashram etc. He was very much influenced by the Gurukula system of education. He was also inspired by Gandhiji’s ideologies and took part in the freedom struggle and served a jail term. Then he came back to his patron Sri Mutt and served as a teacher for some time.

Accidentally Sharmaji came to be noticed by his father Kappanna who visited the Sri Mutt once. So he was brought back to his native place by his father. And he married Miss.Parvathi of Sujjaluru, a nearby village. After a short stay in his native place Sharmaji went to Bengaluru. There he tried very hard to get a teacher post in Sanskrit, but the efforts were invain. Still he did not give up. He started home- teaching of Sanskrit to some students. But his unfulfilled desire of establishing an educational institution haunted him always.

Fortunately Sharmaji came into contact with some philonthrophist -businessmen like Dharmaprakasha late Sri K.C. Ramaiah, late Sri. Kasturi Ranga Shetty and others who supported his cause of Institution establishment. Thus was established ‘Rashtriya Vidyalaya ‘ in 1940, initially in Hosoji Rao Darmashala at West Gate of Lalbagh. There were only six pupils and Sharmaji himself taught them in the beginning. Sri K.C. Ramaiah was Founder President of the Rashtriya Shikshana Samithi (the early name of the Institution) till his last day. The rest is history. With the relentless struggle and efforts of Sharmaji, the RV Institution grew from strength to strength. Now this RV Education Institution has grown into one of the distinguished Higher Education Institutions in the country imparting general and technical education.

After sowing the seed of education and nurturing it at Bengaluru, Sharmaji came to his native taluk of T. Narasipura which was then very backward educationally. During those days one had to go to Mysuru for highschool studies. Realizing the ardent need for high school in this backward area, influenced by Gandhiji’s ideals , Sharmaji started the Grama Vidyodaya Sangha in 1946 and became the Founder Secretary with the sole purpose of serving the educational needs of this taluk. Late Sri Sahukar K.C. Subbanna was the Founder President of Grama Vidyodaya Sangha.

Initially, a high school was opened in a small rented building in Dalway Agrahara which was later converted into multi-purpose high school. Afterwards a Pre -University College and some vocational courses were also started. Many land owners came forward to sell their lands for cheaper prices. Realizing the great concern of Sharmaji for the educational development of the region, some philanthropists also extended their helping hands, as a result of which the GVS Institution had been established in the vast area of 26 acres. The main building of the Institution had been inaugurated by His Highness Sri Jayachamaraja Wodeyar in 1951.

Now the Grama Vidyodaya Sangha has been running different schools and colleges in its vast campus from Pre-Primary to Under Graduate level. As an alumnus of Sri Siddhagangha Mutt , and also as having the first hand knowledge of the hardships of the rural children, Sharmaji started the free ‘Mid-day meal’ in the Institution in 1955. Now this scheme has been extended starting from Pre –Primary to Degree level. Sri Sharmaji passed away in 1969 with some of his educational missions unfulfilled.

The present Management Committee headed by his Holiness Sri.Sri. Siddhalingha Swamiji and Sri. K. P. Mahadevaswamy General Secretary, have been treading the progressive path to fulfill those missions of the Founder.

  •         Padmabhushana Dr. Sri Sri Shivakumara   Swamiji, Sri Siddhaganga Mutt, Tumkur, Was the Hon.  President of  Grama Vidyodaya Sangha for the period 4.4.2013 - 21.01.2019. He had been the  guiding force for all the developments and progress of all the institutions run by Grama Vidyodaya Sangha. With his blessings,  the present Board of Management has been striving  relentlessly for the cause of education.

  • Sri K.P.Mahadevaswamy has been serving the Institution in the position of General Secretary for the last 29 years. An alumnus of this Institution, he has been inspired by the Founder Secretary and treading the progressive path in serving the cause of education. He is the driving force behind starting of Pre-Primary, Primary Schools, new High Schools, Girls Pre-Universtiy College. Free Mid-Day meal facility which was started by the Founder Secretary has been extended up to Degree College with his initiative. During his period rigorous developments have taken place in terms of infrastructure – new buildings, library, laboratories, and playground and security wall around the campus.
